ALANIS MORISSETTE MANAGER ADMITS TO $4.8M EMBEZZLEMENT FROM SINGER, $1.7M FROM OTHER CLIENTS

A business manager has been charged with embezzling more than $6.5 million from pro athletes and entertainers including pop singer Alanis Morissette, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Jonathan Todd Schwartz, 48, of Playa Vista, is accused of wire fraud and filing a false tax return for failing to disclose the purloined funds to the Internal Revenue Service, a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said.

Schwartz, who lived in Agoura Hills at the time of the alleged crimes, has agreed to plead guilty to two of the felony offenses, the news release said. He is a former member of Sherman Oaks-based GSO Business Management, which cooperated with the investigation.

4 Dead in New Shooting in Mexico’s Caribbean Resort Region

Gunmen attacked the state prosecutors’ office in this Caribbean resort city Tuesday, and authorities said four people were killed, ratcheting up tensions just a day after a shooting at a music festival in a nearby town left three foreigners and two Mexicans dead.

It was too early to say if the attacks were linked, but they were a marked intrusion of bloodshed into Mexico’s main tourism zone, a region that had previously been spared much of the violence plaguing other parts of the country.

The governor of Quintana Roo state, Carlos Joaquin, said three attackers and one police officer died in Tuesday’s incident. He said five suspected attackers were taken into custody. He urged calmed, saying the federal government was sending more security forces to the region.

A witness said the gunmen who attacked the prosecutors’ office also threw two explosive devices at a perimeter wall. A reporter at the scene saw police remove a body from a guard post near the building after the attack.

Lindsay Lohan hasn’t converted to Islam, her rep says

The latest unfounded rumor about Lindsay Lohan? That she may have become a Muslim.

The rumor began spreading Saturday when Yahoo.com reposted a story that originated with the website International Business Times. The “Mean Girls” star and Syrian-refugee activist, 30, had recently deleted all her Instagram and Twitter posts, and at her Instagram account of 5.7 million followers she placed an Arabic phrase she transliterated as “Alaikum salam” — usually rendered “assalamu alaikum” or “as-salaam alaikum” and meaning “Peace to you.”

Obama greets champion Cubs: Sports bring us together

WASHINGTON – When President Obama welcomed the 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs to the White House on Monday, the outgoing commander-in-chief and the potential dynasty intersected for just one afternoon, yet created an atmosphere that transcended many titlists’ Oval Office visits.

Obama, a former resident of Chicago and avid White Sox fan, was as entertaining as ever with his speech, ribbing the team with one-liners galore while ultimately paying tribute to the Cubs’ success and gracefully accepting the standard team jersey. But there was a part of his speech that brought a calming feeling across the room.

Cubs, world champions at last, visit White House for first time in 129 years
“Sports has the power to bring us together, even when the country is divided,” says Obama.

Trump Changes Plans on MLK Day Visit To African American History Museum

President-elect Donald Trump is no longer expected to visit the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in observance of Martin Luther King Day, senior level transition sources tell ABC News.

Senior sources initially said Trump would visit the museum, but ABC has learned that the visit was removed from his calendar due to scheduling issues and was not fully planned out.

Trump is expected to visit the museum sometime after he assumes office, the sources say. He will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Washington, D.C., in another way, though details were not immediately available today.

News of the planned visit on Martin Luther King Day came Saturday as Trump drew ire from critics over a Twitter attack against Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.

CNN to Sean Spicer: Jim Acosta ‘has our complete support’

The Trump transition team’s calls for an apology from CNN correspondent Jim Acosta are being met by something else: a strong statement from CNN supporting Acosta.
“Being persistent and asking tough questions is his job, and he has our complete support,” the network said Monday morning.
Acosta attracted President-elect Donald Trump’s ire during a contentious press conference last Wednesday. After Trump criticized CNN from the podium, Acosta interjected and forcefully tried to ask a question.

“I felt it was only fair that if our news organization is going to be attacked, that we get a chance to ask a follow-up question about what Donald Trump was talking about,” Acosta said on television afterward.
Incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer has repeatedly said that Acosta should apologize.

John Lewis Leads the Charge Against Donald Trump as U.S. Marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The feud between President-elect Donald Trump and civil rights icon John Lewis took on added meaning Monday, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, with Trump in his Manhattan apartment building and Lewis leading an event honoring King.

Trump used Twitter to mark the holiday, calling on people to “Celebrate Martin Luther King Day and all of the many wonderful things that he stood for.” Trump also will meet privately with King’s son, Martin Luther King 3rd, spokesman Sean Spicer said. He had no public events planned.

Lewis, meanwhile, is set to be the keynote speaker at a King scholarship breakfast in Miami. The legendary Freedom Rider and top organizer of the 1963 March on Washington seems intent on making Trump his new fight.
